My Mouse!

Here's a tip we give to parents: When you need to jump in and help your young child at the computer, it will be less frustrating to the child if you offer assistance without completely taking over. To stop a potential power struggle, do not put your hand on top of your child's hand on the mouse. Instead, empower your child by placing your child's hand on top of yours. You'll actually be in control of the mouse, guiding your child, but having the "upper hand" will give your child a feeling of control as you work together.

  1. I use this technique with my students all of the time and it really does work. In fact, today I had a student take his hand off of the mouse and tell me, "Ms. Tammy put your hand there!". I of course am an obdient teacher a put my hand on his mouse. He then put his hand on my hand and told me what he wanted me to help him with. Made my day!
